Free Wood Duck House Plans (Design Overview & Reference Diagrams)

If you’re looking for simple, field-tested wood duck house plans, this page provides a clear view of the design, main components, and overall structure. The goal is to help you understand how the house is built and how the parts work together without turning this into a step-by-step build guide.

Components, Dimensions, and Notes

The labeled image above identifies the major components of the house. Each part is straightforward, and the design relies on simple pieces working together rather than complicated construction. The descriptions below explain how each component functions within the overall structure. Specific dimensions are provided in the downloadable diagrams referenced later on this page.

Sides

The sides define the height and depth of the house and support the front and back. They also help maintain alignment and provide the structure needed for the front to open and close properly.

Back

The back provides rigidity and serves as the main mounting surface when attaching the house to a post. It carries much of the load once the house is installed in the field.

Front (Full Door)

The entire front is a single piece that opens outward, pivoting from the top. This full access makes seasonal cleanout and inspection significantly easier compared to smaller openings.

Maintenance Door (4" x 4")

Located below the entrance hole, this small rotating door is used to control access to the opening outside of nesting season.

Top

The top provides protection from rain and weather exposure.

Bottom

The bottom includes drainage holes that allow water to escape. This helps reduce moisture buildup and extends the life of the house.

Mounting Post

The house shown is mounted on a post, which is one common way to install it. Other mounting methods can also be used depending on location and preference.

Predator Guard

The predator guard helps reduce access by animals that would otherwise be able to reach into the house.

Design Overview

This design reflects houses that have been built, installed, and maintained in real conditions. The focus is on durability and ease of maintenance rather than appearance, with an emphasis on making seasonal cleanout and long-term use as straightforward as possible.

One of the most important features is the full front opening. Being able to open the entire front allows for quick and complete cleanout without having to reach into a confined space, which becomes more important over time. The front pivots from the top and is held in place with simple fasteners rather than specialized hardware, keeping the design reliable and easy to work with.

The maintenance door is closed after fall cleanout and opened again in the spring before ducks arrive during migration. This provides a simple way to limit access during the offseason while allowing normal use during nesting season.

Drainage is handled through holes in the bottom, allowing moisture to escape naturally. This reduces the chance of rot and helps keep the interior from remaining damp.

Material choice plays a role in how long the house will last. Cedar is commonly used for this design because it holds up well to weather exposure and resists decay over time.

The image above includes visible damage from a woodpecker. That is not part of the design, but it reflects what can happen in real-world conditions over time.

Free Downloadable Plans

The file below provides a set of reference diagrams for this design, including cutting diagrams, front door details, and pre-drilling diagrams. The cutting diagram includes the dimensions for each component, and some dimensions may vary slightly depending on the thickness and width of the materials used.

This file does not walk through the full build process, assembly sequence, or how the components fit together step by step. It is intended to be used as a reference alongside your own build approach or experience.

What These Plans Include—and What They Do Not

These plans provide a clear view of the design, including the main components, layout, and dimensions. They are intended to give you a solid understanding of how the house is constructed and how it functions once installed.

They do not include a step-by-step build process, detailed assembly sequence, or the reasoning behind each construction decision. Those details tend to matter most during the actual build and are not fully captured in diagrams alone.

Practical Field Notes

Houses like this are exposed to the elements year-round and will show wear over time. Designs that use durable materials and prioritize access and maintenance tend to perform better in the long run than those that are difficult to service. Annual cleanout is an important part of maintaining a usable nesting box, and the full front opening makes that process easier and more effective.
